Pol Roger

In 1855 Pol Roger started the production of sparkling wine; by the time of his death in 1899 his company in Épernay had established a good reputation. Pol Roger champagnes were getting popular among French aristocrats and champagne lovers abroad.

[SPLIT]

The British market was especially important: statesman and future prime minister Winston Churchill was an enthusiastic fan of the champagne brand. The relationship between the champagne family and Churchill became so close that the prestige cuvee was named after him. In 1984 Pol Roger introduced cuvee Sir Winston Churchill, a champagne made of vintage 1975. Since then the domain produces this cuvee in very good vintage years and releases the champagne after about ten years in cellar.

Origin of the name Pol Roger

The name Pol Roger comes from the founder of the house: Pol Roger. He was a passionate winemaker who dedicated his life to making the best champagne. He started his work in 1849 and since then the house has grown into a world-famous brand. The Pol Roger house is known for its quality and elegance. The house wines are known in the world of champagne and are drunk by many celebrities. The house of Pol Roger has also been a proud supplier to the British Royal Family since 2006.

Brand awareness

The brand owes its fame to Sir Winston Churchill. He had been a regular customer since the Second World War and his name is on a number of special cuvees. Winston Churchill was such a fan of the brand that he named his best race horse after Pol Roger.

Unlike many other champagne houses, which often work with large quantities of sweet and dry fruit, Pol Roger purchases his own grapes per hectare. The grapes come exclusively from the best vineyards. This allows the house to assess the quality of the fruit before it arrives. The production process is also traditional: the Champenoise method is used. The wine undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle. The bottle is stored in cool cellars, resulting in a soft and elegant mousse.

Pol Roger Brut Vintage is a very special champagne because it is only made in top years. This champagne is 100% Pinot Noir and matures for 3-4 years in wooden barrels before being bottled. This is a powerful and complex champagne that is perfect for a special occasion or as an aperitif.

The Wine Cellar at Pol Roger

Pol Roger has a very special wine cellar on two floors. The cellar was built in 1851 and is 16 meters deep. The cellar contains more than 2 million bottles of Champagne. This cellar is also special because it is one of the coldest in the Champagne region. These, together with the vineyards, are located in the gently rolling slopes of the Valée de la Marne. The wine cellar is also where Pol Roger keeps his famous Champagne Cuvee Winston Churchill. The long cellars ensure that the bottles can mature quietly and develop to their full potential.
