It is the first champagne house founded in 1729 and was inspired by a progressive monk... Dom Thierry Ruinart was a very intuitive, far-sighted and hardworking Benedictine monk who lived from 1657-1709. When he turned 23, he left his home in Champagne for the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, which was one of the most influential educational centers near Paris. Here he was exposed to the big city and got to know the world where he also came into contact with 'wine with bubbles', not yet known as Champagne, but already popular among the young aristocrats.

Dom Ruinart had a good eye on the future and a smart business mind. He continued to visit his brother and parental home in Champagne again and again and became convinced that this 'wine with bubbles' or sparkling wine would have a promising future. He shared this belief with his brother and nephew.
In 1729, 20 years after Dom Ruinart's death, his nephew Nicolas Ruinart founded the first champagne house, Maison Ruinart, and has always honored his uncle's name ever since.
Ruinart's success was partly due to an important revolution. On May 25, 1728, Louis This royal decree opened the doors of Europe to this lively wine in 1729. Nicolas Ruinart started his first official business in wine with bubbles on September 1, 1729, the first bottles were intended as gifts for customers who bought clothing and fabrics, which was what his business actually consisted of. Nevertheless, Nicolas continued to believe in this sparkling wine and six years later he achieved success with it. In 1735, Maison Ruinart decided to completely exchange clothing for champagne trade. This now became Nicolas's mission and the growth was enormous: in 1730 he sold 170 bottles, in 1731 already 3000 and in 1761 already 36,000 bottles. The Ruinart family has owned this company for 2 centuries and each generation continued the love and passion of Dom Ruinart and nephew Nicolas. The champagnes have always remained of excellent quality and the unique shape of the bottles is a tribute to the historic bottles of the 18th century.
Chardonnay represents the soul of Ruinart. This grape from the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims terroirs can be found in all cuvées. With its fresh aromas, liveliness, purity and clarity, it is the most important in all wines. This delicate and fragile chardonnay shows its rich aromas after slow maturation in the cool lime cellars (Crayères) of the Ruinart house: 3 years for non-vintage wines and 9 to 10 years for a Dom Ruinart.
